1869
The textile cooperative installs itself in an old factory in what was then the town of Gràcia (now a district of Barcelona). A new factory begins to be built in Mataró in 1874 and all the cooperative’s production is moved there one year later.

Façade of a dwelling of the cooperative according to Gaudí’s design. 1878
Antoni Gaudí graduates from the Barcelona School of Architecture. The industrialist Salvador Pagès commissions the young architect with the project of the cooperative’s factory complex, which is envisaged to include industrial buildings, social spaces and dwellings.
Although the architect planned thirty dwellings for the workers, only two of them came to be built and are no longer extant. Each house comprised a large living room, a dining room, four bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a washroom and a little storeroom in the basement.
Rear and front façades of a social club designed for the cooperative. Gaudí submits the design of the social club with drawings of the three floors of the building and sketches of the façades giving onto the garden and the street.

General drawing of Gaudí’s design for the cooperative. 1881
The architect signs the general drawing of the cooperative. The bleaching shed is identified with the letter H and the latrines building with the letter V. The darker lines indicate other already existing structures of the mill, which were not built by Gaudí.

Elevation and plan of Gaudí’s first design of the bleaching shed. 1883
The design of the cotton bleaching shed is completed. The initial design included seven arches, which would be increased to the 13 arches which may be seen today.

Interior of the shed with its arches partly chopped off to allow the construction of the new street, Carrer de la Cooperativa. 1896
To make room for the new street called Carrer de la Cooperativa, part of the western façade of the shed and part of the adjacent latrines building are chopped off. This partly mutilates the arches, the remains of which then abut on a newly built bearing wall.
-
Reconstruction of the shed’s structure. 2002
On the occasion of the International Gaudí Year commemorating the 150th anniversary of the architect’s birth, Mataró City Council undertook the complete restoration of the building, including the restitution of the mutilated parts of the shed and of the latrines. The restoration process, which was entrusted to the local architect Manuel Brullet i Tenas, was finished in 2008.
